Welcome to the 6th edition of the British Journal of Nutrition's Paper of the Year. Each of the nine papers short-listed for the competition was selected by one our Deputy Editors based on originalitysignificance and rigour from all papers accepted for publication in the BJN in 2024. Congratulations to all authors of these short-listed papers.

These short-listed papers exemplify the excellent research that is being carried out in nutrition including methodological papers in nutritional epidemiology, a randomised controlled trial of the health benefits of wholegrains, new discoveries about obesity and biological ageing and clinical nutrition studies of people with Crohn's disease. Many of the important challenges in nutrition research benefit from collaborative approach including research that crosses national, disciplinary and species boundaries.

Each year, our winning paper is chosen by an independent panel of international experts who consider all short-listed papers. I am delighted to announce that Dr Abdu Oumer and colleagues from the School of Public Health, College of Health and Medical Sciences, Haramaya University, Harar, Ethiopia are this year's winners of the British Journal of Nutrition Paper of the Year competition for their paper entitled "Burden of selenium deficiency and cost-effectiveness of selenium agronomic biofortification of staple cereals in Ethiopia". This collaborative study includes colleagues from Kenya and the UK.

Congratulations to Dr Oumer and colleagues who have been invited to present their work described in this paper at the Nutrition Society conference 2025 in Loughborough.

All of these papers are freely available to read below.
